The Best Racquet and String Combos
This article will serve as a continuously updated (hopefully) list of excellent racquet and string combo’s that I’ve tried.
There are several different approaches one can take when it comes to optimizing racquets and strings:
Colour matching
Enhancing strengths
Mitigate weaknesses
In my opinion, a “perfect” string setup accomplishes all of the above, with colour matching being a secondary priority, though I admit that there’s a strong argument to “look good, play good,” in a sport that relies so heavily on confidence.
It should be noted that there’s a difference between “mitigating weaknesses” and cancelling out a racquet’s inherent qualities. For example, trying to completely neuter the Minolon-VDM feel of an EZONE may be mitigating its weakness (poor feel), but it also fights against the racquet’s inherent character. The art in string-racquet optimizing lies in this balance.
Yonex EZONE 98 (2025)
Mains: Grapplesnake Soldier
Crosses: Toroline A5
Soldier adds ball-grip and spin to a 16×19 pattern that’s deceivingly dense. This aids in net-clearance and spin modulation. The firmer layup and abrasive texture (it feels like a high-grit sandpaper) offers a crisp feel that cuts through the VDM without excessive harshness and ensure control isn’t sacrificed despite the shaped profile.
A5 offers enhances power on on-centre shots and deepens the ball-pocketing effect of Minolon so the character of the racquet is preserved. A5’s superior slickness supports strong snapback for longer lasting playability and improves spin potential.
